Services are available to all Mayo Clinic Rochester employees and their dependents. Each eligible individual has unlimited telephone consultation and resource referral for any dependent care or care giving issues. Legal and financial consultations are limited to three per year, and each consultation must be on a new topic.

Services provide unlimited assistance designed for family care and personal needs which span the life cycle. We provide:
- Comprehensive telephone consultation by experienced Work-Life Specialists to assess needs and address questions and concerns
- Consumer education and information on care options, service types, and financial resources
- Verified resource searches for local service providers, including cost and availability
Many employees have family care giving responsibilities. Family care issues can be complex and difficult. These problems can affect your ability to focus and perform well at work. Work-Life Specialists will search for the information you need and have it in your hands within a few business days, saving you valuable time, energy and stress.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use the Services?
You and your eligible family members can access assistance through your program’s toll-free telephone line. Callers should ask to speak with a Work-Life Specialist. If a Specialist is not immediately available, please leave your name and number and your call will be returned promptly. You can also contact us and a Work-Life Specialist will get back to you to arrange a consultation, or click on the Assisted Search links to initiate the process online.
What happens after I connect with the Work-Life Specialist?
The Work-Life Specialist begins an extensive assessment process to determine your specific needs. They will work with you from the initial consultation through resource referral and follow-up.
How long will it take before I receive the referrals and resource information?
The referral information and pertinent literature will be faxed, e-mailed, mailed, or given to you verbally over the telephone within three business days from your initial call.
How do I know if the referral resources you identify have openings?
The Work-Life Specialist will call each referral source to ensure they have openings and can meet your specified needs. If there is a waiting list, you will be informed as to its length, and how to get on it.
What if I interview the care providers you identify and none fully meet my needs?
You have unlimited usage of these Services. Just call us back and we will expand the search into a different geographic area, or look for additional types of care options.
Does my company pay for services and providers that I am referred to?
Typically, your company does not cover services provided by these resources. However, you may wish to check your company’s array of benefits regarding any services, programs or financial assistance available.
Do referrals provided by Work-Life reflect endorsements?
Referral sources identified by this Service do not reflect recommendations or endorsements of the specific providers or programs. Provider information, fees and availability are subject to change. The final responsibility for verifying information, as well as evaluating, selecting, employing and reimbursing providers lies solely with you. Care should be selected based on what you deem most appropriate to meet the specific circumstances and needs.
Child Care Consultation & Referral
Childcare Consultation & Referral takes the worrisome aspect out of securing information and finding licensed, affordable, child care for working parents. Work-Life Specialists answer questions, evaluate child care needs, discuss available options and provide useful information and verified referrals to local child care providers. As a new parent who’s never used childcare before, how do I know what is available?
There are two broad categories of care: care provided in your own home and care provided in the community. With in-home care, the provider comes into your home to provide care on a part or full-time basis. The caregiver, often referred to as a sitter or nanny, either commutes to or lives in your home. With community care, a range of options typically are available, including child care centers, family day care, nursery and preschools, and before and after school programs. The Work-Life Specialist will review the different types of care options and help you determine which will best meet your family’s needs.
How do I know how to assess a center or care provider?
There are many factors involved in choosing quality child care. When you call the Service, talk to us about assistance in assessing providers. The Work-Life Specialist can walk you through this important process. We can also send you resource packets that contain articles on parenting, or choosing childcare providers.
Adoption Consultation & Referral
Individuals and families choose to adopt for many reasons. All adoptions involve the legal termination of one parent-child relationship and the beginning of another. The process is challenging, but it is a joyful and rewarding experience. Whether you are considering adoption, planning to adopt, or have initiated the adoption process, Adoption Consultation & Referral can provide valuable assistance.

We can help orient you to the adoption process and various options, answer any questions, and explain what to expect regarding steps involved, such as the home study process. We can put you in touch with domestic and intercountry adoption agencies, as well as provide relevant information, consumer materials, resource searches and referrals. In addition, we can provide referrals for adoption attorneys, support groups, home study agencies, and financial assistance programs.
Educational Resource Assistance
Whether you are looking for options for your child or yourself, Educational Resource Assistance is an invaluable resource for families with questions about education. Consultation is available with a Work-Life Specialist who can provide information and assistance on:

Elder Care Consultation & Referral
An estimated one in three working adults has care giving responsibilities for parents, in-laws, grandparents or other relatives. The effects on the care givers can be dramatic. On average, they lose nine days of productivity per year researching, arranging, ensuring and providing care for their elder loved ones. Not surprisingly, caregivers are also three times more likely to suffer depression than non-caregivers.
Elder Care Consultation & Referral provides support, consultation and a wide range of information, assistance and referrals to support elders and their caregivers. Resource referrals may include:
- In-home and community care
- Residential facilities
- Respite care
- Support groups
- Financial options, including Medicare and Medicaid

My 82 year-old mother wants to continue living alone in her home. My siblings and I are concerned that she is not eating properly or may fall and injure herself. Can you assist?
More and more elderly persons are determined to remain in their own home. Fortunately, as our population ages, more services are designed to support their independent living. Our Work-Life Specialists will assess your mother’s needs, and search for resources in her community. A variety of resources including emergency response systems, home delivered meals, chore services, visiting nurses, home health care, transportation, geriatric case management, and adult day care are available to help elders retain their independence.
My father is talking about moving into a retirement home in two to three years. Is it too early to start looking for facilities?
It is not too early to start looking. Often, independent living and retirement communities have long waiting lists. Our Work-Life Specialists can search for appropriate resources in your father’s community, as well as find out how long the waiting lists are.
Dependent Adult Care Consultation & Referral
Dependent Adult Care Consultation and Referral offers caregivers consultation, assistance, and resource referral to help with dependent adults under 60 years of age who have a chronic illness, or physical or mental disability. After assessing the dependent care needs, an extensive search is conducted to identify appropriate resources for the adult with disabilities, the caregiver, or both.
Dependent care resources and referral overlap with those for elder care. The effects on caregivers of both types are very similar. There are some differences, though, and Work Life Specialists can assist you with matching your needs with the appropriate referrals.

Legal Services
Legal Services provides an intake, referral and consultation with a local Plan Attorney for assistance on a range of legal matters. Benefits include:
- No-cost consultation with a local Plan Attorney for up to 30 minutes on the phone or in the office

- Access to an online Legal Resource Center and Legal Document Libraries

What kind of assistance is available?
Consultation on a range of legal matters including:
- Family Law (adoption, guardianship, divorce, custody, visitation)
- Housing and Real Estate Law (home purchase, landlord/tenant disputes, foreclosure)

- Estate (simple wills, probate)

- Document Review (up to 6 pages at no charge)
- Simple Dispute Resolution (if the Plan Attorney determines that a simple letter or phone call is likely to resolve the dispute)
How does it work?
- After a basic intake, a match is made based on your specific legal matter and geographic location.
- This benefit provides one (1) consultation with a local Plan Attorney for up to 30 minutes, on the telephone or in the office.
- Each consultation must be a new legal topic.
- Should you retain a Plan Attorney beyond this consultation, their services will be offered at a 25% discount off the attorney’s normal hourly rate on most services.
- You are responsible for the cost of all services beyond the initial consultation.
- Follow up calls are made routinely after each touch point for the duration of the service.
Are there any legal matters that are not covered under this benefit?
Consultation is not available for matters pertaining to patents; securities law; trademarks; copyrights; employment and work related concerns, preparing, completing or filing of federal, state or local tax returns, second legal opinions, immigration and for third party questions.

Are there any financial matters that are not covered under this benefit?
Consultation is not available for matters pertaining to advice on stocks to buy or which credit cards to apply for.
